Area codes in the US were initially assigned based on the pattern of population and telephone use, with larger cities and more densely populated regions being assigned more codes. Over time, as the demand for phone numbers increased, the need for additional area codes grew, leading to the creation of multiple area codes for a single geographic region. Today, there are over 400 area codes in the US, which are assigned by the North American Numbering Plan Administrator (NANPA).

When dialing within the same area code, only the seven-digit telephone number is required. When dialing to a different area code, the full ten-digit telephone number (including the area code) is required.
